We are excited to be collaborating with fellow locals at Outer Banks Distilling for our 1st Kill Devil Hills Cocktail and Culinary Weekend on Jan 20-22!
The event will take place right here at the Sea Ranch Resort on the OBX.
If you don’t know Outer Banks Distilling by name, you might know the name Kill Devil Rum, which is the rum they have been producing for a little over a year and a half (to great acclaim already as well) . One of their four founders, Matt Newsome, will be a featured speaker, giving us a history of their spirits, the legend of “Kill Devil Hill” and hosting a rum-based mixology session. Matt is a local with years of experience in the ever-evolving food and beverage scene here on the OBX, and will share his passion, creativity and knowledge.
Our Executive Chef, Sam Larson, will welcome Mark Newsome as guest chef for the culinary events; Mark brings his experience and knowledge from the highly acclaimed Joshua Wilton House in Harrisonburg, VA. With such an impressive team working in tandem, we expect some delightful concoctions and very good times. The event will also include a visit to the Outer Banks Distilling location in Manteo, where attendees will tour the facility and see rum-making up close!
We expect this to be a fantastic weekend and will be the first of many great events in 2017…

The Sea Ranch Resort has teamed up with Outer Banks Distillery to host our first Kill Devil Cocktails and Culinary Weekend, featuring Kill Devil Rum

Here is more information about Sam, Matt and Mark:
Chef Sam Larson: Sam is the Executive Chef here at the Sea Ranch Resort. A native of Iowa, Sam began his cooking career at a very young age in his father’s cafe. He has spent many years here on the Outer Banks working his way through a variety of restaurants (Bacu, Red Sky, JK’s) and food service businesses (Fresh Market, Ocean Blvd Catering) learning how to bring an excellent dining experience to his customers. Sam’s culinary philosophy includes maximizing sustainable, high-quality, local products, and delighting the senses of his diners; he believes if you cook with love, ‘you can taste it.
Matt Newsome: Matt is a local who graduated from ECU and has spent over a decade in the restaurant and brewing industry here on the Outer Banks. He met his fellow partners in Outer Banks Distilling while working at the Outer Banks Brewing Station and is impatiently awaiting the release of their first spice rum as well as a barrel aged “gold” release this winter.
Mark Newsome: Mark is a self taught chef who ran a farm-to-table restaurant in Harrisonburg VA, the Joshua Wilton house, for 15 years. He also ran a Tex Mex Tequila bar for two years which sparked his interest in distilled beverages. He has been living on the outer banks full time for a year and a half and has plied his trade as the resident burger specialist at Art’s Place (which has one of the best burgers ever!) in Kitty Hawk, NC. Mark’s work at the Joshua Wilton House put him at the front edge of restaurants that support local farmers and was the first restaurant to use Polyface Farms Products. Mark also won First Top Chef at VA State University’s, has is a regular speaker on the topic of sustainability and using local products and has appeared on the Food Network with Bobby Flay.
